The Formartine Design Competition

calling budding designers in S1 - S4 @ Turriff, Meldrum and Ellon Academies

The Formartine Oral History Archive is due to be launched in March 2008. As part of that archive, we'd like YOU to design a CD-cover for your area. The cover will require the following:

  • A design or image that represents your area, e.g. in Turriff, the Turra Coo is famous; Ellon was the home of the Earls of Buchan, who lived at the Castle; Oldmeldrum is in sight of Bennachie!

  • A back and a front cover - the size of a standard CD case

  • A spine label which features the words Formartine Oral History Project

  • Space for the following sponsorship logos on the rear cover: The Formartine Oral History Project's logo; The Elphinstone Institute; Aberdeenshire Council; AROHA (Aberdeen & Region Oral History Association); Aberdeen College

This competition is open to ANY pupil of the three academies in FIRST to FOURTH year, whether they are doing art or not. The competition will be supported by the Art and Craft & Design Departments in the three schools. The competition will be launched fully at the start of the summer term.

The closing date for entries is FRIDAY 6 JULY 2007

The competition will be judged by an expert panel during the summer holidays and the winners will be announced in the first week of the new session in August.

The Prize

There will be two winners from each school.

The six winners will then be invited to take part in a 2-day design workshop with local designer Lynne Strachan of Curious Cranberry Designs, where they will work on three final designs - a bittie like the Apprentice, but Alan Sugar won't be shouting at anyone! ;-)

This workshop will take place during the October Holidays - 22-23 Oct, 2007 at the Aberdeen College IT Centre. Principal Rae Angus has kindly agreed that the winners can use the College's IT Centre and their state of the art Apple Mac computers to create the final designs.

All entrants should ensure that they are available to come into Aberdeen on these dates, and that their parents agree. The winners will enjoy hospitality from the College over their two days, with refreshments and the like. Lynne and the IT Centre staff will be there to supervise them. There will be a publicity launch when the winners arrive, David Atherton (Aberdeenshire Council Arts Education Officer) and I will be there to welcome them. Parents are advised that they will have to transport the winning pupils to Aberdeen, unless alternative arrangements can be made.

We hope this will be an enjoyable day and that the winners will get a real working experience of designing a project brief.

Finished Designs

The three final designs will be used on the three sets of CDs which will be at the school/or public libraries, and in the North East Folklore Archive, Mintlaw.

ENTRIES

Designs can be in ink; printed; watercolour; or coloured pencil; the use of progams such as Freehand (preferably Freehand 10) and Photoshop is positively encouraged as this is the type of software will be used in the workshop!

Details of entry collection will come soon. It is envisaged that the teachers will collect the designs and send it on.

GET SCRIBBLING!!

and if you want some inspiration - go to Grampian Association of Storytellers to see the design of their CD cover!
